COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND
MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION...
1. Do you have to have experience to tryout?
No, we train everyone from kids who have never bowled before to ones that have
multiple years of experience.
2. What type of equipment do I need?
SEE COACH CATLIN OR CHAD AT BARTLETT LANES BEFORE
PURCHASING ANY EQUIPMENT FOR THE SEASON !!
A. Shoes - can be purchased online or at a local pro shop. You can get entry level
shoes for around $80, but if I were going to buy shoes for my child then I
would get the Dexter SST6's. You will pay about $100 or more but the shoes
will last you quite a while. They come with interchangeable soles and if the
soles wear out then you can buy new ones.
B. A Bag - You will be purchasing three balls during your first year in the
program. You can get a two ball roller and also purchase a "joey." This
will be slightly cheaper than buying a three ball roller bag. I recommend
buying the three ball roller and then you have the capability of carrying
four balls in the future with the "joey." As bowlers become more experienced
they find that they need different types of balls to bowl on different oil
patterns and usually wind up buying four or more balls. I know that this
sounds crazy, but it is true! You can get a three ball roller for around $110.
C. Wrist brace - Not everybody needs one but as you are starting out it is good to
use until you build up strength in your wrist. Check with me on which
kind to get. They usually cost around $30.
D. BALLS - OK here it is... Balls are very important to your success. There are
literally hundreds to choose from. The coaches and I recommend letting us
analyze your swing and roll and then we can help you select the best fit for
your game. Most bowlers have more than 3 balls in their arsenal. In your first
year you will need 2 strike balls and 1 spare ball. The average cost for the
strike balls is around $150 and the spare balls cost about $70. All balls weigh
different, PLEASE SEE COACH CATLIN BEFORE PURCHASING
ANY BALLS TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THE CORRECT WEIGHT
AND STYLE. When you are getting your balls drilled we recommend and
encourage you to get them with fingertip inserts and TURBO switch grips for
the thumb. Chad's Pro Shop in Bartlett does a wonderful job and he is great
with the kids!
E. Rosin Bag - cost is about $7
Ok...total cost is around $620...Parent's -- I know this is a lot of money, but this is
what it takes to be outfitted for success from year one and on. I am a parent of
three myself so I knew when writing this that you would look at this scenario and
say to yourself "OH MY," if not something else. The coaches and I are here to
help...please utilize us. We do have some funds on hand to help those who cannot
afford all of this. If you are someone who truly cannot afford this and your child
makes the team then please contact me directly at (901)-288-7438 and we can
discuss options to help.
3. Do I have to attend camp?
YES, the Brad Angelo Camp has been the difference in our team's success over the
past five years. Brad is a professional bowler on tour and a friend of mine. He
comes to Memphis every year to do a camp just for WSHS bowlers. We have
recently started opening it up to others and look for the number of participants to
grow rapidly. Camp cost is $249, but with help from a generous donor the cost for
WSHS bowlers is $175.
4. When are tryouts?
The end of August.
5. When does the season begin and how long is it?
The season begins the first Monday in October and lasts through the last week in
January. However, we begin off-season conditioning in April and we practice two
days a week. So, if you are looking to play another sport such as basketball or
football then you will have to decide which one you want to do since they overlap
with competition dates. If you want to play golf, run cross country, play baseball,
play tennis, or run track then we can work around those dates since most of that
competition is done either before our season starts or after it is over.
6. Do I have to practice with the team?
YES, if you don't practice then you don't play.
7. Does it cost to practice?
YES, the cost for practice is $6 during the off-season and $5 during season.
Practice times are right after from 3:00 - 5:00.
8. What about fundraising?
Each child will be required to fund raise to help offset expenses for our
tournaments and the state tournament in January. Each child will be required to
raise $250 and we have several ways that they can do that. We will go over those
options at the beginning of the season when we have our parents meeting.
9. Does my child need a physical?
YES
10. What about these matches?
We have pre-season matches, regular season matches, post-season matches, and
tournaments. The matches during the season are either played on Mondays,
Tuesdays, or Thursdays. The times are 3:00 - 5:00 and locations vary. We will
have a complete list of regular season matches sometime in September. I will
provide you a list of pre-season matches and tournaments at the parents meeting in
August.
11. Are there college scholarships available?
YES, for both boys and girls!!
12. What is expected of the parents?
Simply put...to positively support your child, the team and the coaching staff. To
assist in whatever way you can to make the year and years to come a welcoming
place for all of us to be.
13. Do you play in tournaments?
YES, we have several tournaments that we compete in. During the 2010-2011
season we are planning on competing in 7 tournaments.
September: TN/MS Challenge at Strike Zone lanes in Southaven, MS.
TN Jamboree at Hermitage lanes in Nashville
October: Fall Bash at Hardin County
November: Turkey Throwdown at Hendersonville, TN.
December: National High School Tournament in Cincinnati, OH
Louisville Classic in Louisville, KY.
As with all of these tournaments, there are expenses we occur. More information
on ideas to help out will come as the season begins.
I will be putting more on here as I think of it....so keep checking back! I love it that
you are interested in bowling at White Station. I am very passionate and serious about
this program and the kids in it. My wife and I sacrifice a lot for me to coach and we
only ask that you put all you can into it and do your best. At the end of the day if we all
come together and do what is right for the kids and in our relations with one another,
then we all will be winners and the tradition of excellence that is already in place will
continue. I do this for the kids and I need your help to ensure that they are as
successful as possible.
Thank you for trusting your child to me. If I can answer any other questions please feel
free to contact me at (901)-288-7438.
Sincerely,
Michael Catlin
