For all kids new to bowling at White Station High here are some Q&A that might help:
1. Is there a cost for bowling?
YES, 1)During the months of august and september practice fees are $5 per session and we will
be practicing twice a week on mondays and wednesdays at Imperial lanes on Summer Ave.
2)If you do not have equipment already then you will need to purchase a spare ball that is
custom fit and has fingertip inserts. See Coach Catlin for specifications including what weight
the ball should be. The cost for a spare ball is around $60.
3)Next is a bag and shoes. A two ball bag should run around $80 and shoes can cost anywhere
from $70 to $170. Beginners only need to focus on the lower costing shoes. I recommend
dexter and etonic shoes. Etonic does have special prices for high schools and Coach Catlin has
that information on exact costs. He can also order the shoes if needed.
4)The last item is a strike ball. There are more than 300 different kinds of these balls. After
learning the fundamentals and release techniques of bowling then you will need to get with
Coach Catlin to decide on which ball would be appropriate.
2. What about scheduling and how long is the season?
Our schedule can be found on this website just click on calendar from the main page. The
season begins the first monday in October and continues through the end of January.
3. What about fundraising?
Each child will be required to raise $250 to help offset state tournament expenses. There are
three different ways to raise the money:
1) Parents can opt to simply make a donation
2) We have a bowl-a-thon in November (get info from Coach Catlin)
3) Company sponsorships (See Coach for further details)
4. Does my child need a physical?
YES !!
5. What about these matches?
Matches are normally scheduled on mondays, tuesdays, or thursdays. Practice dates will be
scheduled around the match dates. We practice from 3-5 each time and our matches are also
3-5 pm.
6. Do you play in tournaments?
YES, We have a city tournament in December. The district, regional, and state tournaments are
in January. We also go to Savannah, TN. in October on a saturday for a 3 match round robin
which is properly named the Hardin County FALL BASH. We are in the planning stages for
participation in a national tournament held in Illinois or Kentucky, a Christmas tournament the
first weekend in December in Columbia, TN., and an additional match against Tupelo HS from
Mississippi.
7. Are there college scholarships available?
YES especially for girls. There are also opportunities for guys but the NCAA only recognizes
womens bowling. We have been fortunate to have four collegiate signees so far.
8. What is expected of the parents?
Simply offer positive encouragement to not only your child but also to the other children as
well during all of our matches.
I hope you guys have a great time being a part of our team. If you have any other questions
feel free to ask me. ---- COACH
